Roya Saghiri was Released from Tabriz Prison

Roya Saghiri, a student that resides in Tabriz who was arrested by the security forces during the December 2017 protests and sentenced to imprisonment and lashes by the Revolutionary Court and the Tabriz Penal Court, was released on Wednesday by the Supreme Court.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civic Prisoners, Roya Saghiri, a student residing in Tabriz who was sentenced to 23 months of imprisonment, one year suspended imprisonment, and 10 lashes by the Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court and Branch 103 of the Tabriz Criminal Court, was released from Tabriz Central Prison by the Supreme Court today, Wednesday, November 28th, 2018.

Roya Saghiri appeared at Tabriz prison to serve her sentences on August 25th, 2018.

Roya Saghiri was tried in Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court of Tabriz on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “insulting the leadership” and was sentenced to 8 months of imprisonment for propaganda against the regime and 15 months imprisonment for insulting the leadership. The verdict was later confirmed at the appeals court.

The security forces of the Ministry of Intelligence have arrested more than forty students and student activists throughout the country from December 30th, 2017 to January 4th, 2018.

In the January protests, a large number of people were arrested and interrogated in various cities. During these protests, at least 25 people were killed and around 5,000 were arrested throughout Iran.

Ms. Saghiri was transferred to Tabriz Prison to serve her sentence on August 25th, 2018.
