Haidar Ghorbani’s Death Sentence was Upheld by Appeal Court

The death sentence of a political prisoner was upheld by the Sanandaj Court of Appeals.

According to the Hengao website, Haidar Ghorbani’s death sentence was approved by Branch 27 of the Supreme Court on Thursday, August 6th, 2020. The Sentences Execution Office were immediately notified.

This human rights media says that was informed of possibility of the execution of this political prisoner in the coming days.

Haidar Ghorbani was sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj, headed by Hossein Saeedi, on charges of “revolt” and “cooperation and membership in the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran” in January 2020. The sentence was officially communicated to him in Sanandaj Prison on January 28th, 2020.

Despite the persuading of Haidar Ghorbani’s family and lawyer, Branch 27 of the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence on Thursday, August 6th, 2020, and the sentence was immediately referred to execution office.

Haidar Ghorbani and his brother-in-law Behnam “Mahmoud Sadeghi”, both residence of Kamyaran, were arrested by security agents and transferred to Sanandaj Central Prison on September 2016.

During interrogation, Ghorbani was forced under severe torture to confess to “collaborating and assisting in the murder of several members of the Revolutionary Guards.”

Sources close to the Ghorbani’s family have stated in recent months that the trial and execution sentence of the political prisoner is to be conducted only on the basis of his confession and said: ” The Ministry of Intelligence and Information Protection of the IRGC has provoked the families of the victims to demand the harshest punishment for Haidar Ghorbani in court.”

During his imprisonment, the Ghorbani was denied the right to a lawyer, and security officials threatened him with severe punishment before the court could issue a death sentence.
