Extention of detention of an environmental activist in Sanandaj

The detention of an environmental activist in Sanandaj, capital of Kurdistan Province, western Iran, was extended for the third consecutive time by the judicial institutions of this city.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, Branch 2 of the Sanandaj Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, chaired by Judge Shalgardi, extended the detention of Faranak Jamshidi, a Kurdish environmental activist for the third sequential time on Monday, September 28th (2020).

The detention of this activist has been extended while her family had been previously informed that her detention will be turned into a bail on Tuesday, September 29th (2020).

Sanandaj intelligence agents arrested Faranak Jamshidi, a member of the Green Kurdistan Society, at her private residence on the morning of Sunday, June 28th (2020).

Plainclothes agents ransacked the house and confiscated some of her belongings such as a computer and a cell phone, Ms. Jamshidi’s relatives said.

Faranak Jamshidi had been summoned several times by security forces in the fall of 2018 during a large-scale mass arrest of environmental activists and members of the Kurdistan branch of the National Unity Party, and was interrogated about her activities and those of her husband Armin Esperlos, who was in custody at the time.

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), Ms. Jamshidi was detained while Afshin Sheikh-ol Eslami, a civil activist in Sanandaj, was also detained by intelligence agents yesterday. He was one of the activists who was arrested for a month in the fall of 2018.
