Azerbaijani Civil Activist, Abbas Lesani was Released on Medical Leave

Abbas Lesani, an Azerbaijani civil activist, was released for six months in a statement issued by the Forensic Medicine Commission.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, after receiving a response from the three-member forensic commission, Abbas Lesani, an Azerbaijani civil activist, was sent on six months medical leave on Sunday, February 13th, 2022.

According to this report, a letter sent by the Medical Commission to Ardabil Prison regarding Mr. Lesani‘s physical condition states: “He was examined and his spine’s MRI was reviewed and his intervertebral disc has the fifth lumbar and first external vertebrae (L5-S1) and he has spondylolisthesis (slip of the upper vertebra on the lower vertebra) and occasional sphincter disorder and weakness and numbness of the left lower extremity. He should be given the opportunity to receive medical treatment outside the prison for six months, during which time he should undergo the necessary medical treatments and surgery, and after the expiration of the mentioned period, he should come back for examination.”

On January 24th, 2022, this activist imprisoned in ward 7 (security) of Ardabil prison had informed his family that he had been sent to Ardabil forensic medicine for examination and comment by the members of the commission.

The Azerbaijani political prisoner was sent for medical exam for the second time following the presentation of an MRI and medical evidence of the need for immediate lumbar disc surgery. Earlier, forensic medicine in a letter, had recommended Mr. Lesani to a trusted specialist for examination and confirmation of documents and tests.

On October 21st, 2021, with the deterioration of his condition, Mr. Lesani was sent to the hospital to undergo an MRI test at the Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil for diagnosis by doctors.

Mr. Lesani has been suffering from a lumbar disc problem in prison for a long time, and the interventions of the security agencies in his case have caused the negligence of the prison authorities regarding his physical health.
