According to this report, the General Justice of Kurdistan Province announced the execution of Haidar Ghorbani, a political prisoner, in Sanandaj Prison on December 19th, 2021. According to the statement, Mr. Ghorbani was charged with ” rebellion, complicity in the premeditated murder of three people” and membership in groups opposed to the Islamic Republic.

In September of this year, Javid Rehman, Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran, and eight human rights experts, issued a joint statement stating that this political prisoner had never been armed, expressing “serious concerns about a fair trial and torture.” They demanded that the death sentence be overturned.

UN human rights experts have called for the cancelation of Haidar Ghorbani’s death sentence

The statement, which was also signed by the “Working Group on Enforced Disappearances”, referred to the detainee’s detention in solitary confinement, lack of access to a lawyer during interrogation, and stressed that the verdict against the detainee was based on “armed uprising against the government”, but the same sentence emphasized that “Mr. Ghorbani was never armed.”

Mr. Ghorbani’s lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, had previously stated that Mr. Ghorbani had been sentenced to death on the charge of ” rebellion” and said: “It is against the Islamic Republic, but my client has never made a confession in this regard, and the only reason to prove this accusation was the claim of the Sanandaj and Kamyaran intelligence services.”
