Execution of a Prisoner on Charges of “Drugs” in Zanjan Prison

The death sentence of a prisoner named Mohammad Reza Mazkoohi, who had previously been arrested and sentenced to death on drug-related charges, was carried out in Zanjan Prison.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, on the morning of Monday, December 6th, 2021, a 23-year-old prisoner named Mohammad Reza Mazkoohi, who had been imprisoned in Zanjan Prison for three years and seven months, was executed.

According to this report, Mohammad Reza Mazkoohi was arrested along with his cousin on the Qazvin-Zanjan highway three years and seven months ago on drug charges.

Confirming the report, Iran Human Rights Watch said: “Mohammad Reza Mazkoohi was arrested three years and seven months ago on the Qazvin-Zanjan highway with his cousin on drug charges. Mohammad Reza and his cousin were both sentenced to death in the Zanjan Revolutionary Court, but Mohammad Reza’s cousin died in prison two years ago due to illness.”

The execution of this prisoner has not been announced by the Iranian media or official sources as of this writing.

It should be noted that since the beginning of this year, 109 prisoners who have been sentenced to death on drug-related charges have been executed in Iran.

According to reports compiled by the Human Rights Organization of Iran, in 2020, 25 people were executed on drug-related charges.

Earlier, in a report, the Human Rights Organization of Iran expressed strong concern about the significant increase in drug-related executions and warned about the continuation of this trend.
