Yesterday afternoon, a Sunni activist living in Mahabad was arrested by the city’s intelligence service.
According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, a Sunni activist named “Hossein Hassan Khani” from Mahabad was arrested by the city’s intelligence service at noon yesterday, July 23rd, 2020.
Mr. Hassan Khani is a retired teacher of education and a member of the Quranic school in Mahabad. He suffers from heart disease and due to his old age, his relatives have expressed concern about not knowing about his health condition.
A well-informed source, who did not want to be identified, told the campaign: “On the morning of Wednesday July 22nd, 2020, “Kakeh Hossein Hassan Khani”, a member of the Quran school in Mahabad, was chased by three people while shopping in the bazaar and while returning home, the same people showed the summons to Kakeh Hossein and declared that he should go to Mahabad intelligence. Hossein Hassan Khani replied that this was a summons and not an arrest warrant and resisted to go. At 14:30, they arrested Kakeh Hossein with 5 vehicles and took him to Mahabad intelligence Office.”
At the time of writing, Mr. Hassan Khani is being held by the security forces of the Mahabad Intelligence Agency.
The reasons for the arrest and the accusations against the Sunni citizen, which led to his arrest, are not yet known
