Increase in Executions in Birjand Prison to 4 Individuals, 2 of Whom Are Baloch

On Wednesday, April 30, 2024, the identities of three more executed prisoners were confirmed in the early hours of the same day in Birjand Prison. With the inclusion of these individuals, the number of executions has risen to 4, including two Baloch prisoners and one woman. Earlier news of the execution of Mahmoud Mengeli (Gorgij) had been released.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, the previously executed individuals had been sentenced to death on charges related to drugs, and on Tuesday, April 29th, 2024, they were transferred to solitary confinement in Birjand Prison for execution.

The identified prisoners are Mohammad Shahbakhsh Dana, 22 years old, from Zahedan, Mahdi Eshterk Shahrstank, 40 years old, son of Ibrahim, married with children, from the village of Eshterk, a suburb of Zehak County, and Mahmoud Mengeli (Gorgij), 42 years old, son of Shadi, married with children, from Salehabad District, a suburb of Khorasan Razavi Province. As of now, there is no information available about the identity of the woman who was executed along with these three prisoners.

Mohammad was arrested in early 2021 in an inspection checkpoint in the city of Birjand on charges related to drug crimes and was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Birjand City.

Mahmoud Mengeli was also arrested in 2019 in Birjand along with two other Baloch citizens on charges related to drugs and was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of this city.
